Dexcom G7 CGM Data Integration with Connect Care

Effective June 30, 2026, Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP) data can be integrated into Connect Care. Dexcom G7 CGM systems provide real-time glucose readings, trends, and alerts for patients managing diabetes, and regularly reviewing these insights are critical for informed clinical decision-making and proactive care. This milestone marks a significant step forward in leveraging digital health tools to enhance provider efficiency and improve patient outcomes.

How to Initiate Data Sharing

Patients will need both an active MyChart account and a Dexcom account to facilitate data integration. Diabetes care team members will ask for verbal consent from the patient to share their Dexcom CGM data to Connect Care. Once verbal consent is obtained, prescribers or diabetes care team members will place a "MyChart Dexcom" order in Connect Care to request sharing of Dexcom CGM data from patients. This order will trigger a secure message to the patient via MyChart, prompting the patient to acknowledge and confirm consent to share their Dexcom CGM data with their care team.

What You Will See

Once the patient provides consent through their Dexcom account, standardized Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP) metrics will be recorded directly in a dedicated flowsheet in their chart, including: CGM Report Range (date), CGM Use (%), GMI (%), Average Glucose (mmol/L), Coefficient of Variation (%), Time in Range (%), Time Very High (%), Time High (%), Time Low (%), and Time Very Low (%). This data can be accessed in the Diabetes Synopsis activity or within the Diabetes Management Navigator under "CGM Trend", or directly within the "Remote Monitoring Data Collection" flowsheet

This streamlined access to AGP data supports more personalized and timely diabetes management without the need to access third-party websites to review data, or manual data transcription into Connect Care.

New Report Types Available Online for Patients through My Personal Records

As per the Government of Alberta, starting November 3, 2025, Albertans can access operative, procedure, and investigation reports through My Personal Records (MPR) in MyHealth Alberta, the provincial personal health record tool. The initial release includes one year of historical data, with additional history to follow in the coming months. Privacy controls, such as opt-in toggles and confirmation pop-ups, are available specifically for these new reports. MPR users who previously shared procedures information with another person will need to reauthorize access once the new data becomes available.

To support Albertans, more information is available on MyHealth.Alberta.ca, or they can contact 1-844-401-4016 or email myhealthrecords@gov.ab.ca for support. Providers continue to have access to this information through their regular channels, including Alberta Netcare.

For more information about the release of operative, procedure, and investigation reports in MPR, please visit For Healthcare Providers.

Cessation of Automatic Printing of Connect Care Lab Requisitions (October 1)

To support more efficient workflows, reduce paper consumption, and promote digital integration, effective October 1, 2025, automatic printing of Connect Care laboratory requisitions for patient blood and urine specimen orders will be disabled. All other specimen requisitions will continue to automatically print.

Currently, lab requisitions for ambulatory clinic and post-discharge orders are automatically printed from Connect Care. However, these paper copies are often unnecessary in most situations, as lab orders are already visible to Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) staff directly within Connect Care, and are visible to patients in the After Visit Summary (AVS) as well as the Connect Care patient portal (MyChart). Going forward, a printed copy of these lab requisitions will no longer be required in most clinical scenarios, and manual printing should only be used when required for patient care or specific collection scenarios.

Critical Prescriber Steps
  • Please ensure that orders are signed so they are visible.
  • Please ensure expected dates and instructions are included in order, if appropriate.

When Printing Is Still Required

There may be circumstances where a printed copy is necessary, such as when tests are ordered for third-party collection (e.g., out-of-province or private lab), or at a Continuing Care or Corrections site that uses external orders. In these cases, the workflow for how to print (or reprint) a requisition from the "Chart Review" activity is detailed in the below resource:
Also, if a paper requisition was previously required for an external send out to a specialty referral laboratory (e.g., Canadian Blood Services' requisition for perinatal testing), this paper requisition will still be required.

How to Support Your Patients

If a patient indicates they plan to have their collection done at a private lab or outside of Alberta, print the requisition from Chart Review (ensuring "3rd Party Collect" is selected). Otherwise:
  • Print the AVS: Provide the patient with a copy of the AVS and point out that it includes their lab orders, instructions, and other relevant details needed to book their lab appointment.
  • Encourage MyChart use: Point out that there is a MyChart section called “Upcoming Tests and Procedures”, where patients can see all lab tests ordered by their provider (click the camera icon to see an example screenshot). Patients can also access the AVS via their MyChart.

If patients have not yet activated their MyChart account (as seen via the MyChart status icon in the patient chart Storyboard), encourage them to do so. For details on how to check a patient's MyChart account status and send a patient access instructions, see the tip sheet:

Update on Results Release in Patient Portal - Removal of Delay from Remaining Test Results

Starting April 3, 2025, all test results and their results-related documents will become immediately available, without a 5-day hold, in MyChart, the online patient tool for Connect Care.

  • The remaining test results that will be available without a 5-day hold include:
    • All ophthalmology tests
    • Endoscopy reports
    • Pulmonary/respiratory tests and activities
    • Sleep clinic studies
    • Remaining cardiology reports
  • The removal of the 5-day hold on test results in MyChart does not impact what is viewable in My Personal Records, Alberta Health’s online health information tool.
  • Currently, patients who have access to MyChart can see these test results 5 days after their ordering provider receives them. After April 3, the results and related documents will be available to patients at the same time as the ordering provider, in keeping with other results that are available in MyChart.
As with previous releases to make results immediately available, providers may wish to consider giving patients more information about the implications of different results at the time of ordering a test.

Physicians and other providers will continue to have access to these results through their usual channels, including Alberta Netcare.

MyChart - Access Update

As of October 4, 2024, Connect Care's patient portal, MyChart, is now available to all Albertans with an Alberta Health MyHealth Alberta account.

  • Prescribers and staff no longer need to complete the previous activation steps for patients, and can instead provide patients with access information for MyHealth Alberta.
  • The previous activation workflow has been updated to reflect the new access requirements.
  • The self sign-up workflow is no longer required for prescribers and staff to get access to their own MyChart account. Prescribers who would like to access their MyChart account can do so by logging in to their MyHealth Alberta account.
  • With this update, MyChart users (and their proxies) can also now view their Connect Care referrals information within MyChart.
  • Proxy access workflows have not changed.

See the updated resources for more information:

Update on Results Release in Patient Portal

Starting June 18, 2024, five additional test results and their results-related documents will become immediately available to patients in MyChart, the online patient tool for Connect Care, without a 5-day hold.

  • The five test results that will be available without a 5-day hold are:
    • Stress Test
    • Holter Monitor
    • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
    • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Making these results available in MyChart aligns with the release of these same results through MyHealth Alberta in My Personal Records, the provincial personal health record tool.
  • Currently, patients who have access to MyChart can see these test results 5 days after their ordering provider receives them. After June 18, the results and related documents will be available to patients at the same time as the ordering provider, as with other results in MAC.

In addition to the immediate release of the five tests and their related documents, historical results-related documents for tests that were already viewable in MyChart will also be added on June 18. This includes results-related documents for lab, diagnostic imaging and cardiology tests that date back to the start of Connect Care.

  • The historical results-related documents will not appear in the patient's test results, but will be visible in the "Document Center" of MyChart. Patients will not receive an alert that these historical results-related documents are available; the documents will simply appear in the tool to view at their convenience.

As with previous results releases, providers may consider giving patients more information about the implications of different results at the time of ordering a test.

Physicians and other providers will continue to have access to results through their usual delivery channels, as well as through Alberta Netcare.

More information on the release of results is available via a 1-pager.

Changes to Available DI Results in Patient Portals

What is changing

Beginning March 20, 2023, Albertans will be able to view diagnostic imaging (DI) results immediately upon release by the DI testing provider, through Alberta Health’s MyHealth Alberta in the My Personal Records (MPR) application. This will include DI test results from all sites and locations in Alberta, including most community providers, inpatient, ambulatory and emergency departments. This means that DI results will be available in MPR to patients at the same time they are made available to the ordering provider.

To align with this change, starting March 20, 2023, DI test results will also be immediately available in the Connect Care patient portal, MyChart, for patients who have an active account. Currently, in MyChart, DI results are already available to patients, however there is a five-day delay from the time ordering providers receive the results to when those results are released to patients. With this change, the five-day delay will be removed, and results will be immediately available both to patients and the ordering provider. Having access to DI results in both the MyChart and My Personal Records will improve access and consistency of health information for providers and patients.

Physicians and other providers will continue to have access to results through their usual delivery channels.

What to do

Given this change, providers may want to consider giving patients more information about the implications of different results at the time of ordering a DI test.

To provide support and information to all AHS staff and prescribers, AHS is hosting two identical internal webinars on this topic. The Alberta Medical Association and AHS will also be co-hosting a webinar, which will be made available to prescribers both inside AHS and those in the community; a recording of that webinar will be made available after on the AMA website.

Connect Care Provider Portal

With Connect Care growing in Alberta, physicians not using the Connect Care clinical information system (CIS) wonder about how they can follow their patients where Connect Care is the record of care.

A key tool is the Connect Care Provider Portal (CCPP). This connects external providers to the Connect Care CIS, allowing them to request consults, schedule appointments, securely communicate, place orders, and exchange secure messages with colleagues. They can receive notifications about important patient events (e.g., admission, transfer, discharge) and view updates about lab, imaging, test and procedure results. They can also request and follow consultations. The clinical content of the Connect Care health record, including images, care plans, notes, letters and documents can be viewed.

A portals committee oversees CCPP design and deployment and welcomes input from interested providers.

Webinar: Complex Lab Results in Patient Portals

As previously posted, more lab test results were made available last February in My Personal Records (MPR), found in MyHealth Alberta, the single access point for Albertans’ personal health information. These lab results are viewable through the MPR application. Making more results available online provides Albertans with more access to their health information and acts as an additional safety net for patient care within the system.

Through a series of rollouts, additional results are being added to MPR through to September. To date, the following results are now viewable as soon as they are released by the lab:

  • About 95% of the most commonly ordered (by volume) lab test results were viewable as of February 1.
  • More complex results in pathology and other areas are being included in MPR on August 23.

Providers may notice some changes in their patterns of work, and may wish to consider giving patients more information about the implications of different results at the time of ordering a test. Physicians and other providers will continue to have access to results through their usual delivery channels.

For more information about the August 23 rollout, AHS will be hosting a 1-hour information webinar on Zoom:

Changes to Available Lab Results in MyHealth Alberta/My Personal Records

Effective June 15, 2021, lab tests for microbiology and blood bank will be released immediately to Alberta Health’s MyHealth Alberta, in the My Personal Records (MPR) application. This change is part of Alberta Health’s rollout of expanded result release, which began in February 2021, to provide Albertans with more access to their health information.

Once the changes are in place, new MPR users will see an 18-month retrospective view of any lab results slated for release. Existing MPR users will not have labs added retroactively, but they will be able to see the expanded lab results moving forward.

As is the standard practice, Connect Care releases these lab test results to the Connect patient portal MyChart. What’s new is that, as of June 15, 2021, these specific lab test results will be released immediately to MyChart, instead of being delayed by five days as they were previously. This means that patients will have immediate access to more of their own lab results and may have questions for their healthcare providers about them. As part of the overall rollout plan, Alberta Health is planning to release additional lab test results to MPR in the coming months. We will provide more details regarding the next planned release as we have them. MyChart result release will change to immediate for results being released in MPR as they become available.

Alberta Health is providing support to Albertans through the MyHealth.Alberta.ca website and a 24-hour telephone line at 1-844-401-4016. Albertans can also call HealthLink at 811 for health-related inquiries.

New 'Day at a Glance' View in MyChart for Inpatients

Hospitalizations offer an important opportunity to introduce the MyChart patient portal to patients and families, and to promote its use as an aid to care, discharge planning and follow-up. Ward staff (inpatient) can build MyChart activation into patient education activities, and prescribers can routinely check whether their inpatients are aware of portal options.

Starting March 16, 2021, active MyChart users are automatically presented with a "Day at a Glance" display when admitted to a healthcare facility using Connect Care as its record of care. This includes information about the patient's:
  • Inpatient healthcare team
  • Diet
  • Medications
  • Upcoming interventions (imaging, tests, procedures)
  • Consultations
Effective use of MyChart during hospitalizations can engage patients and their families as active members of the healthcare team. Research and experience shows that timely patient information access actually decreases clinician information burdens, as patients and families ask more focused questions and have easier independent access to answers. Also, families can do better when timing visits to fit with inpatient activities.

MyChart Reporting Dashboard

The "MyChart Department Utilization" dashboard is now available. This dashboard outlines the use and uptake of MyChart. It allows operational managers, supervisors and physicians to view how staff and patients are progressing with MyChart in an outpatient context (limited to the logged-on user's department). Prescribers can also explore how patient portal functions are impacting their practice.

The dashboard is available to operational managers, operational supervisors and physicians.

MyHealth Records: More Lab Results Released to Patients via My Personal Records

The following information is provided by Alberta Health respecting some important changes to the My Health Records service:

In 2021, Albertans will be able to view more laboratory test results in "My Health Records" (MHR), the integrated access point for Albertans’ personal health information. These lab results will be viewable through the "My Personal Records" (MPR) application. This change is being made to provide Albertans with more access to their health information, and as an additional safety net for patient care within the system. These results will be viewable as soon as they are released by laboratory services:

  • About 95% of the most commonly-ordered (by volume) lab test results will be viewable by Feb 1, 2021.
  • All remaining lab tests, including more complex results in microbiology, pathology and genetics, will be available in MPR by July 1, 2021.

Lab results ordered from all sites in Alberta, including labs ordered during inpatient and emergency visits will be included in MPR. Once the changes are in place, new users will see an 18-month retrospective view of any lab results slated for release. Existing users will not have labs added retroactively, but they will be able to see the expanded lab results moving forward.

After the changes, patients will have immediate access to more of their own information. Providers may notice some changes in their patterns of work, and may need to consider giving patients more information about the implications of different results when initially ordering a test. Physicians and other providers will continue to have access to results information through their usual channels, including Alberta Netcare.

To support Albertans, Alberta has created the MyHealth.Alberta.ca Web site, a trusted source of health information, and MyHealth Records Support is available at 1-844-401-4016, 24 hours daily. Technical assistance is available between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (MT), Monday to Friday, but a connection to 811 for health-related inquiries, including test results, is available at all times.

Alberta Health introduces Secure Messaging Service during Pandemic

Alberta Health is sponsoring a new voluntary service that can help physicians securely message with patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.  BrightSquid is the selected provider for "MHR Secure Mail" and Alberta Health is making it available at no cost to participating physicians until July 31, 2020.

While any Canadian physician can sign up, the target audience for the Alberta Health promotion is physicians who do not already have a patient portal or other secure communication service available to their patients. There is no requirement to use MHR Secure Mail, or to use it in preference to other secure communication tools.

Physicians sign up for the BrightSquid service and invite their patients to participate. A link to BrightSquid is available via MyHealthRecords, which is also where patients can launch MyChart for secure communications with physicians who use Connect Care as their record of care.

Physicians using AHS information systems should continue to use the secure clinical messaging services provided by AHS, with priority given to communication tools integrated with clinical information systems. Future postings (or in our FAQ Channel) will address questions about how Connect Care physicians can support patients seeking clarity about secure clinical communications in Alberta.

Alberta Health Health Information Systems Review Posted

We've previously posted about reviews contracted to Ernst and Young respecting Alberta Health Services performance and Health Information System strategy.

The second of these reports, "Review of Connect Care, Alberta Netcare and MyHealth Records: final report", is released by government for public access today:
The report recommendations will be considered by Alberta's health informatics stakeholders as the province emerges from the first wave of COVID-19 and works to reinvigorate informatics coordination on multiple fronts.

Physicians may not identify with all of the report assumptions or findings but these are matters of detail and the focus moving forward needs to be on high-level recommendations. The CMIO portfolio would welcome reflections or suggestions via cmio@ahs.ca.

Time to Promote MyChart

Clinicians continue to adapt to social distancing. In addition to expanded use of Virtual Care for patient support at-a-distance, Connect Care providers can leverage communication tools in the MyChart patient portal. We'll be posting more about this in the coming weeks.

As of October 2024, MyChart is available to all Albertans with an Alberta Health MyHealth Records account, regardless of their status in Connect Care. For patients who activate, some capabilities can help with clinical communication:
  • Secure Messaging - clinicians can communicate with patient portal users and can take advantage of messaging pools to quickly screen incoming messages.
  • Results Messaging - results released through the patient portal can be annotated as a form of quick and targeted communication.
  • Video Visits - teleconferencing integrated with the patient portal can be easier for patients and providers to use.
For now, check out a growing list of postings in our FAQ channel:

Automated Patient Appointment Reminders go Live

Connect Care ambulatory care clinics can leverage the efficiency of automated appointment reminders for patients with upcoming clinic, day surgery, therapy or investigation visits.

The system was integrated with the clinical information system (CIS) January 27, 2020, supporting appointments from January 30, 2020 forward. Ultimately, the system will facilitate the over 25,000 reminders daily handled by legacy processes.

The automated reminder system supplements information and instructions that are sent out via mail or the patient portal, with prospect for fewer missed appointments and improved patient choice. However, it is important for physicians to ensure that their clinic has made the necessary arrangements, scheduling staff are ready, and that patient education materials are in-clinic.

The following resources can help physicians answer patients' questions:
